BEAST FROM THE EAST

History of Polish hooligan movement!

“(...)In such conditions of increasing level of aggression, in the 90’s, a modern hooligan movement was born at stadiums in Poland. While fans from many European countries drew inspiration from the Italian “ultra” style, Poles were fascinated by the hard, violent, English style. "Hooligans" captured the stadiums! Many fans/hooligans were also skinheads, so heavy Doc Martens, bald heads and flyer jackets (often reversed on the orange side) dominated the sectors of most ardent fans in those times. (...) Fights usually broke out at the terraces, but hooligans were also arranging numerous ambushes on a opposing group traveling by train (which was the primary mean of transport to away games). Typically, a train with hostile fans was boarded by a “kamikaze”, who at the agreed place pulled the emergency brake. Train stopped, and then hooligans lurking nearby, began the attack. As a rule, they firstly threw stones and smashed most windows in the carriages, then tried to get on the train (if the victims panicked, it was very easy to beat them practically without losses) (...)”.

“ULTRAS RAPID” PROBLEMS

After last year's derby of Vienna, unfinished due to the massive invasion of Rapid fans onto the pitch, the ultras of this club had a hard time. Firstly, "Ultras Rapid" suspended their activity, but in the spring 2012 they returned to the stadium. Oliver, a long term leader of the “Ultras Rapid” group, tells us about the current situation of Rapid Vienna fans.

“ZABRANJENI” - PARTIZAN BELGRADE

“(...)It all started at the beginning of second round of last season, we couldn’t accept some things and finally our revolt started. Alcatraz used to cooperate with police (...) We would like to bring the old school climates at the South Stand, no pussies, but brother next to brother, one for all and all for one. Since the conflict has began, there is less and less people in our once glorious section.(...)”

ZALGIRIS VILNIUS “PIETU IV” - “FAITH THAT SURVIVED”

The oldest and largest ultra group in Lithuania is "Pietu IV". It exists for 27 years now, and actually the first fans in green and white scarves appeared in the stands even earlier, in 1980. We present a conversation with Storas, the undisputed leader of the firm, a witness, and later an active participant in its development from inception until today. The conversation starts in the days of the Soviet Union, when the history of “Pietu IV” began...

LADS `82 - DINAMO MINSK

“(...)L82 was established in 2004, following merging of the firms "Patriots" and "Capitals Legion", at the same time it was also joined by many new boys. At the beginning we were oriented to compete with firms from Europe and Russia, as in Belarus, we practically had no proper rivals. (...) You want to break your life and career in a second? Join us! Sooner or later you will understand your place in this country and come to the conclusion, that it is better to live out of this system, like we do, than to be a tiny screw in all this. And although in the past years many of our young boys felt the burden of life and went to jail, we don’t give up and move on.(...)”

We would like to invite you to a series of articles on Scottish hooligans firms. In this issue, you will meet a team quite strange and characteristic, as the hooligans of both clubs from the city of Dundee (United and FC) are united in the same firm, "Utility":

“(...) In 2007, Dundee FC, played at home a friendly match against Millwall. To meet the Bushwhackers, we gathered around 90-100 people, and it was a kind of achievement, considering that for the last 3 years we have failed to mobilize more than a dozen people. Firstly we tried to attack them before the game, in the city center and after the match, 20 hooligans from Utility firm made a kamikaze-style action and charged whole Millwall contingent, marching in full escort to the railway station.(...)”

FOOTBALL FANS IN ULSTER

“(...) At the end of the 70’s Linfield’s “Section F” firm was created (it took name from the home end at Windsor Park). Generally, the situation can be compared to that in Serbia, where Arkan recruited his "Tigers" at Maracana in Beograd. In a similar way, UDA and UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force), acted at Glentoran or Linfield terraces, and the IRA (all of its branches) at Cliftonville.

In the 80’s and 90’s, major riots broke out during games between Linfield and Glentoran, the two clubs, supported by Protestants. Fighting took place both at the LFC stadium, and at The Oval (home of GFC).(...)”

NORTH AMERICA ULTRAS

“(...) In 5 years, I think the Ultras mentality will have spread well throughout the entire league. Its a slow process, but it is moving. People have to remember that this is a very new type of culture here in North America. People here are used to going to sporting events and sitting down and clapping, but it is slowly changing here. (...) In Canada, there are very, very strict laws on the use of pyro, and there are large amounts of police at each game in Toronto. In the USA, the laws aren't as strict, but it's still very risky to light pyro.(...)”

Spartak Varna fans with a number of actions against the club

Феновете на Спартак Варна, които подготвят протест срещу клубното ръководство, облепиха целия град с плакати с призив за посещение на мача и протеста на 3 март от 15:30 часа и с плакати на които е изобразено лицето на Янко Станев зачеркнато с голям Х !Покрита е цялата централна част на града и всички спирки по бул.Владислав и бул. Сливница.Плакати има и в повечето от кварталите в града.Това е поредната подобна акция на феновете срещу ръководителите на клуба, с които са в открит конфликт от повече от две години.Ултрасите няма да се откажат от борбата си, дори напротив - по-обединени са от всякога ,а действията им са все по-смислени!Няма да се откажат докато клуба не се освободи от присъствието на компрометираните личности.

Феновете на Спартак разпространиха и агитационен клип за протеста, който организират навръх Националния празник.Видеото е озаглавено "Заедно ще си върнем отбора на сърцата и на живота ни!" и вече се разпространява в интернет.Протестът срещу ръководството на тима, ще бъде на стадион "Спартак" по време на мача с ФК "Несебър", който е насрочен за 15:30 ч. на 3 март. От агитката "соколите" са провели среща с органите на реда, на която са уточнили, че всичко ще премине мирно, без ексцесии.

Spartak Varna fans who are preparing the protest against the club management, hang around town many banners calling for the visit of the match and protest on 3 March at 15:30 and with posters showing the face of their owner Yanko Stanev crossed with a large X! They cover the whole downtown and all bus stops on Vladislav and Slivnitsa boulevards.Also the most neighborhoods in the city.That is another action of Spartak fans against the club owners.The ultras will not give up the fight, they are even more united than ever, their actions are more sensible and will not stop until the club is left by corrupted individuals.

Spartak ultras also published propaganda video entitled "Together we will reclaim the team of our hearts and our lives!".The protest against the leadership will take place at "Spartak" stadium during the game against FC Nessebar, which is scheduled for 15:30 on March 3 - Bulgaria's Day of Liberation from the Ottoman Empire.Fans of "falcons" (nickname of Spartak) have held a meeting with the police and clarified that everything will go peacefully, without excesses.

Нашата позиция относно полицейския произвол срещу български граждани в Солун и неговото медийно отразяване.

Our position about police actions against Bulgarian citizens in Thessaloniki and the media coverage.

Драги „журналисти”,

За пореден път ставаме свидетели на тенденциозно и непрофесионално отношение от ваша и от страна на отговорните институции спрямо футболните привърженици и в частност към тези в България. Нещо повече - вчера бяха погазени правата на български граждани, на граждани на ЕС и това бе извършено от страна на представителите на друга държава от ЕС. Всичко това се случва под напълно безучастния поглед на българския консул в Гърция, на медиите и на държавните институции, от които се очаква да вземат адекватни мерки, така щото правата на българските граждани да бъдат подобаващо защитени.

Не само че автобусите с фенове, пътуващи за волейболния двубой между ЦСКА и Ираклис (Солун), не са допуснати да влязат в града, а и на феновете, възпрепятствани да посетят спортното мероприятие, не е изтъкната каквато и да е причина за това от страна на представителите на гръцката полиция. След като е информиран за случващото се, консулът ни в Гърция не реагира по никакъв начин и не търси решение на проблема. Казва им просто, че полицаите нямат право да ги задържат и че щял да направи каквото може. Консулът е информиран и за това, че онези групи български привърженици, които са пътували за волейболната среща с лични автомобили, са били причаквани в района на залата от групи фенове на „Ираклис”, били са заплашвани и гонени. Консулът обещава, че ще се погрижи и за това, но в крайна сметка реакция няма и българските граждани не получават никаква защита.

Феновете, които са пътували няколко часа, са принудени да се върнат към границата, отново без обяснения от страна на представители на полицията. На гръцко-българската граница нашите граждани са посрещнати от гръцки жандармеристи. Българските фенове вече са слезли от автобусите, а провокативното поведение на гръцките жандармеристи логично води до ескалиране на напрежението. Следват грозни сцени – гръцката жандармерия използва сълзотворен газ и бие безогледно: мъже, жени и деца на по 14-15 години, които са пътували със знанието и съгласието на родителите си, под попечителството на по-възрастни фенове. Стига се дори до това, че е обгазен и граничен служител от българска страна.

За всичко това българското общество е информирано в една от новинарските ви емисии с едноминутен анонс. Пропускаме факта, че водещата чете написания ú текст без елементарно вникване в същността му и уведомява зрителите, че привържениците на волейболния ЦСКА не са допуснати до стадиона. За нейно сведение (както и за тези, които са изготвили „новината”) волейболните двубои вече рядко се провеждат на стадион, като предпочитаните за целта места са спортни съоръжения тип „зала”. Оставяйки настрана този факт, необяснима е липсата на реакция от вашата медия, която в редица по-маловажни случаи е проявявала дори прекомерна активност – телефони до една, втора, трета институция, търсене на директен контакт с журналист на мястото на събитието, търсене на мнение от страна на полиция и т.н. Сега имаме случай на погазени права на български граждани, на граждани на Европейския съюз, а реакция няма – нито от ваша, нито от страна на съответните български институции.

Разбира се, осъзнаваме, че живеем в България и сме свикнали на подобно отношение – на крайна незаинтересваност, на липса дори на адекватна реакция в такива случаи както и дори на откровено манипулативно отразяване на дадени събития. Във въпросната „новина”, прочетена от вашата водеща, тя завършва с информация за арестувани фенове, които били откраднали стока от бензиностанция и дори не стигнали до Солун – случка, която няма нищо общо с трите автобуса български привърженици, подложение на терор от страна на гръцката полиция. Не се споменава, обаче, нито дума за това, че се нарушава основно право на свободно движение на всеки гражданин на обединена Европа в границите й.

Естествено, появиха се няколко версии за поведението на гръцките власти. Ако гръцката полиция се опасяваше от стълкновение с чакащите в засада местни фенове, защо не бяха взети адекватни мерки и спрямо тях? Ако капацитетът на залата не е позволявал допускането на всички гостуващи фенове, защо срещата се е състояла в тази зала? Ако не е имало достатъчно билети за гостуващите привърженици, защо това не бе обявено по-рано? Ако българският консул в Гърция е бил известен за всички тези проблеми поне от няколко души още в рамките на деня, защо не е реагирал адекватно? Все въпроси, на които осъзнаваме, че няма да получим отговор, но държим все пак да зададем.

Осъзнаваме също така, че ще пренебрегнете този наш протест срещу апатичното отношение на българските институции, срещу крещящата липса на професионализъм от ваша страна и срещу тенденциозното отразяване на всяко конфликтно събитие, в което участват футболни привърженици. Осъзнаваме, че вие ще си останете завинаги кукли на конци, неспособни да изразят гражданска позиция, неспособни на нищо друго, освен папагалско повтаряне на писан текст, отдадени единствено на евтини сензации и евтини манипулации.

Отвратени сме от жалкото подобие на институции в България, които нямат смелостта и доблестта не само да защитят собствените си граждани (които плащат заплатите им със своите данъци), а дори са готови да позволят гаври, подобни на вчерашната, в името на собственото си „спокойствие” и откровен непукизъм. Готови са дори да приемат, че техни гранични служители ще бъдат обгазявани от чужди полицаи в името на някакви криворазбрани добросъседски взаимоотношения. Осъзнаваме, че изразяването на гражданска и институционална позиция, на национална позиция, не е приоритет за българските властимащи. Осъзнаваме, че дори са готови да преследват собствените си граждани, които са готови да изразят такава.

Осъзнаваме всичко това, но държим да ви кажем, че ние сме тук и ще бъдем тук. Завинаги. С нашата любов, с нашата вяра, с нашите сърца. Защото ние сме това, което обичаме. Вие сте това, което работите.

Dear „journalists”,

We have recently witnessed another case of manipulative and unprofessional approach from your end as well as from the responsible institutions towards football supporters and particularly towards the Bulgarian ones. Furthermore – on 11.01.2012 were violated the civil rights of citizens of EU country and moreover - by another EU country’s officials. All of that happened with the knowledge of the Bulgarian consul in Greece, the media and the respective institutions in Bulgaria, who are supposed to protect the rights of its citizens.

Not only the buses with the travelling to Thessaloniki fans were not allowed into the city premises, but the supporters who had travelled a couple of hours for the volleyball match between Iraklis and CSKA received no explanation whatsoever from the authorities and the Greek police. Naturally, Bulgarian supporters are being expected by Iraklis fans in the area around the hall where the match was to begin. Bulgarian consul was informed about both issues, promised to take action, but eventually did nothing. He merely advised the travelling fans that the Greek police has no right neither to detain them, nor to prevent them from visiting the city and the volleyball match.

CSKA Supporters are forced by the Greek police to stop, turn around and all three buses are escorted back to the Greek-Bulgarian border. There the supporters are expected by approximately 200 heavily armed Greek policemen. Bulgarian fans have already left the buses and are provoked by the Greek gendarmerie, so naturally the pressure builds and things rapidly escalate into open clash with the armed men. Greek police demonstrates then exceptional brutality beating severely women and children, who were travelling under the guardianship of older supporters. Tear gas is being used and even applied directly inside the buses, so pure luck prevented anyone from dying. Furthermore – during that melee one of the officials from the Bulgarian Border Police was gassed as well.

All that was communicated by your television (bTV) to the Bulgarian society with 1 minute news, which ended with manipulative reference to a shop-lifting in a gas station in Bulgaria – fact that is in no way related to the three buses with CSKA supporters and aiming only at creating negative image of the supporters. All that being said, we realize that you will wilfully disregard our protest against both the striking indifference demonstrated by the Bulgarian authorities as well as by your shocking lack of professionalism when informing about events in which football supporters are involved. We realize also that you will remain forever puppets incapable of expressing and defending an independent civil point of view, because you’re only dedicated to cheap sensations and cheap manipulations.

We realize all that, but we would like to assure you that we’re still here and we’ll always be. Forever. With our love, our faith, our hearts. Because who we are is defined by what we love. Who you are is defined by your job.

"We provide you the first issue of our magazine, addressed to the fans from around the world, interested in the ultras / casuals / hooligans things. Our dream is to create a magazine on a global scale, that is accessible and understandable for fans in all countries! We certainly intend to write about all the countries, in which organized fans movement exists. We are not debutants in this area, as for over 10 years we have been issuing monthly "To My Kibice" (“This is us, the fans”) dedicated to Polish ultras and hooligans, and also, for over 8 years, a quarterly magazine "To My Kibice Plus", which contains reports and interesting facts about football fans from Europe and sometimes also from other parts of the world. Now we go one step further, and will choose the most interesting themes from both Polish magazines, add even more content and present it to you in English!

Every corner of the world and its ultra movement specificity will find it’s place in our magazine! Our ambition is to contribute a little to popularize the traditional ultra style, despite the trends of modern football."

“(...)However, it all started earlier, in 2003 and 2004, when there were two big fights involving football fans. The scale of those events was huge and the authorities, for the first time, got truly terrified. Polish stadiums have never been peaceful, on the contrary, in the 90’s fights and demolishing were on a daily basis. But when in the spring of 2003, before the Slask Wroclaw-Arka Gdynia game, two huge firms clashed on the main street of the city (there was about 800 hooligans involved in this brawl, one of Arka fans was stabbed to death), and a year later, during the match Ruch Chorzow-LKS Lodz, perfectly organized hooliganism with sticks threw out numerous police forces from the stadium (the coppers had shotguns, but they didn’t help) the government finally understood, that something has to be done. Soon, first major repression and arrests began, and the hooligans began to descend to the underworld (...)”

Bulgarian realities, firms review, summary of the season in Bulgaria!

“(...)In Plovdiv, the second largest city of the country, there is also the rivalry between two powerful teams: Botev and Lokomotiv. The potential of these firms is based in 99% on guys from the city of Plovdiv, the clubs have only few fan clubs. Botev has a very large group of fans, even though the inept actions of the President made the club bankrupt and for more than two years they wander through the lower leagues. Supporters, however, excellently present themselves in the stands. The main groups of Botev are “Ludata Banda”, “Izgrev Boys”, “Brigada Trakia” and “Bunta Sever”. Botev fans get on well with the famous Aris Thessaloniki firm, “Super 3”(...)”

FANS’ SCENE IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY

“(...)Sport has always been very important in the Basque tradition, but tough mountaineers preferred the traditional Basque pelota (something like a combination of tennis, hockey and cricket) from "foreign" sports. Eventually, the British sailors and traders managed to infect the Basques with love to football and rugby.

Today, certainly, all major Basque clubs in the play in the Spanish leagues. There is also a national team of Euskadi (Basque Country), which enjoys great support from fans from all over the country regardless of club colours they represent(...)”

INTERVIEW: “ITALY - A PARADISE FOR FOOTBALL TOURISTS”

In the 90’s, Italy truly was a paradise for football tourists. Impressive choreos, spectacular pyro shows and a lot of hooligans’ actions. Today we speak with Rene from East Germany, who often travelled to Italy in the 90’s. Altogether, he attended there in 156 games and was an eyewitness to the development and decline of Italian ultras scene. He will tell us, among other, how difficult it was to get by train to south Italy and betray us, which matches he remembers best.

And finally, after so many years of waiting, in 2011 they returned to an international competition. This fact raised among fans from Wroclaw understandable mobilization, and their European adventure lasted for three rounds. All the matches were interesting in terms of fans, as you'll read in the following relations of fan from Wrocław(...)”

(...)After leaving the train, Poles were attacked by fans of Spartak. Russian began to whistle and throw coins at them, after the Legionnaires began to sing their traditional “away-game” song “We are always there ...” While leaving the tube station, Poles found themselves in serious trouble, as they were attacked by Russians, according to witnesses: a good few hundred Russians. Fortunately for the guests, attackers failed to break through a strong police escort. Some of Poles have admitted, that if the locals were more determined, that fight could be very serious(...).

MagShop Report On Tour is an issue dedicated to football tourism, which is called "Groundhopping" in Europe.That definition cannot be set in clear framework or follow strict rules because every person has its own interests and conception.Fanzine's authors go by their interest about travels and adventures, knowledge of new towns, stadiums, fans.They get inspired not by the football itself but what is happening on the tribunes.
MagShop Report On Tour is the first groundhopping fanzine in the ex-USSR - it is issued in Russia and Ukraine.The project started in 2011, the first issue is in A5 format and has 8 pages.Along with the development of the magazine, its size is growing,too - MagShop Report nr.9 has 56 pages! On 23 September in Katunica (small village near Plovdiv) there was a murder of a young boy,which was particularly insolent.19-year-old Angel was smashed by a van driven by gypsies.That criminal act was caused by a conflict between the victim and a gypsy boy.The gypsy boy is a grandson of the so-called "gypsy baron" and famous criminal,who lives in Katunica.The car accident was deliberate and after that the van smashed three of the friends of the killed boy and three police officers.

That tragedy made people from the village go away protesting against the gypsy clan and their terror.During the procession the heart of Pavel (one of the closest friends of killed Angel) did not stand the pressure and the boy passed away.
Later the local people received great support by football fans from Plovdiv,Sofia,Stara Zagora.The property of gypsy clan was smashed down - cars were broken and some of the houses were burned.
In the next days protests against the brutal murder of Angel and the death of Pavel continued in all the big Bulgarian cities - Sofia,Plovdiv,Varna,Burgas,Stara Zagora,Ruse,Vraca,Shumen,Veliko Tarnovo,Lovech,Pleven,Pazardzhik.Thаt was unprecedented allience of all football fans in Bulgaria who lead the protests in every town.Most of the protest meetings turned into attacks against gypsy ghettos - gypsies were beaten and sheds were burned down.The most vicious riots were in Sofia,Plovdiv and Varna.
On 1 October in Sofia and 2 October in Plovdiv there were peaceful protests which united not only football fans but many young people,rockers,students.They exposed their demands for equality of rights and end of gypsy terror.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION !!! - On 8 October (Saturday) at 16h at Lokomotiv stadium in Plovdiv there will be a football match between youth teams of Bulgaria and Russia.The game is a part of charity campaign for the families of deceased boys from Katunica.Tickets have symbolic price of 2 leva and collected resources will be endowed to needing families.

Legia Warszawa met Turkish Gaziantepspor in the third qualification round of Europa League.The Polish proved again that they are number one on the ultra scene - great number and fantastic pyro-show.The distance between Warsaw and Gaziantep is about 3400 km!

VOJVODINA NOVI SAD - SEASON OVERVIEW

ФК Войводина (Нови Сад) е един от най-старите клубове в Сърбия - създаден е през 1914 година.Поради тази причина винаги е имал солидна бройка от привърженици.След 1945 година Партизан и Цървена Звезда се радват на подкрепата на близо 80% от Сърбия.Проблемът е налице и в намиращия се на 90 км. от Белград Нови Сад.Най-фанатичните фенове на Войводина са обединени в групировката Фирма (The Firm).Тя е създадена през 1989 година и нейното място е на северната трибуна.Фирма се бори еднакво силно както за Войводина,така и за Нови Сад.Води битка против модерния футбол,против безумното увлечение по победителите на деня,членовете на фракцията се стремят се да запалят любовта към Войводина у всеки един жител на Нови Сад.През последния сезон отборът им завърши на трето място в сръбската лига,но игра финал за купата на страната.Оценката за представянето на ултрасите оставяме на вас!

FK Vojvodina (Novi Sad) is one of the oldest football clubs in Serbia - it was founded in 1914.According to this fact Vojvodina has always had considerable army of supporters.After 1945 Partizan and Red Star have the support of nearly 80% of fans in Serbia.The problem also exists in Novi Sad (which is 90 km. away from Belgrade).The most fanatic fans of Vojvodina are united in the group called The Firm (Фирма).It was founded in 1989 and has place on the north tribune of the stadium.The Firm is standing for Vojvodina and Novi Sad at same levels.The Firm has fight against modern football,against the nonsense crush on the winners of the day.The members of the group are trying to enflame the love of Vojvodina in every citizen of Novi Sad.The football team finished on third place in Serbian league in the past season but played in the Cup final.We give you the opportunity to decide what was the presentation of Vojvodina's ultras!
